Find out exactly what's included on the physical cartridge of Aeterna Noctis Caos Edition for Nintendo Switch, including DLC, updates, and gameplay content.
Quick answer
The Aeterna Noctis Caos Edition for Switch includes the full base game and all DLC on the cartridge, with no download required for the main content. You can play immediately after inserting the card.
What makes the Caos Edition different from the standard release
The Caos Edition bundles the original Aeterna Noctis with all previously released downloadable content. This includes the Sunken Crown expansion, new weapons, skins, and additional challenge modes. On the Switch cartridge, everything is stored on the card itself, so you don't need to redeem codes or download separate files from the eShop.
The physical release also features reversible cover art and a full-color manual, which is increasingly rare for modern Switch games. The cartridge is region-free, so it works on any Switch console regardless of region lock.
Difficulty and gameplay expectations
Aeterna Noctis is a challenging Metroidvania with a steep learning curve. The difficulty is intentional from the first level and increases as you unlock new abilities. The controls are polished and responsive, which helps when you're facing the game's tougher platforming sections and boss fights.
If you prefer a more relaxed experience, the game includes an accessibility mode that reduces damage taken and gives you more checkpoints. This doesn't affect trophy or achievement progression, so you can adjust the challenge without missing content.
How to verify your cartridge content and start playing
- Check the cartridge label and packaging: Look for the 'Caos Edition' marking on the front of the case and the cartridge itself. The standard edition has different artwork and doesn't include the DLC on the card. If you see 'Caos Edition' on the spine, you have the complete version. Common mistake: Some retailers list the standard edition alongside the Caos Edition. Always confirm the label before purchasing.
- Insert the cartridge and check for updates: Place the cartridge into your Switch and select the game icon. The console may prompt you to download a system update. This is normal and does not affect the game content on the cartridge. The base game and all DLC will be playable without any additional download. Checkpoint: If the game asks you to download a large file before playing, your cartridge might be the standard edition. The Caos Edition should launch the full game immediately.
- Access the DLC content in-game: Once the game loads, go to the main menu and select 'Downloadable Content' or 'Extra Content' from the options. All Caos Edition DLC items should appear as unlocked. You can start the Sunken Crown expansion from a new save file or continue from your existing progress. Common mistake: Some players expect DLC items to appear in their inventory immediately. You may need to reach the first save point or speak to an NPC to trigger the content.
